Nothins Gonna Stop The Flow Essays - , Term Papers
Nothins Gonna Stop The Flow Nothin's Gonna Stop the Flow ?Yo, do you like these I asked Damian. He was sitting on my bed, disinterestedly watching me model half my wardrobe in front of the mirror. He shrugged, tendrils of smoke creeping from the corners of his mouth. ?I guess.? As he spoke, a huge plume of smoke leapt from his lips, filling the room with a sweet smell. ?Lemme get a hit of that,? I gestured towards the glass pipe. He handed it to me, and I quickly lost interest in finding the right pair of pants. ?You like this I asked him, nodding towards the stereo speakers. Jungle beats were pounding from them. ?Yeah. Did you mix this ?Nah. Chris made it for me.? I returned the colorful bowl to him. My hands, now empty, began to flow in sync with the music. Soon they were dancing in circles around me as my feet led the way. I watched myself in the mirror, satisfied with my body's response to the music. Damien watched approvingly, moving his head in response. ?You gonna go to Burst tonight ?I'm waiting for Chris. He's supposed to spin later, but if he doesn't call me, I think I might just chill on the corner over by Nick's.? ?Well, I'm gonna go pick up a 40 and head down to the park up on 218th in a little bit if you want to come along.? ?Nah. I'm gonna hang around for Chris for a while, but I might stop by later.? ?Alright, cool.? Damien stood up to leave. ?Later,? he said offering me his hand. ?Later.? I joined hands with him and patted his on the back as he made his way to the door. I returned to the mirror almost immediately. I continued to dance in front of it, completely stoned, for what seemed like only a few minutes. By the time the phone's ring interrupted my movement, I was already starting to sweat. ?Yo.? ?What's up It was Chris. ?What's up ?I'll meet you on the avenue in twenty minutes, and we'll jump on the bus.? ?And then take the 7 I asked. ?Yeah. That'll leave us right by Palladium.? ?Alright, later.? Chris and I hung up. I picked a brightly striped shirt off of the heap of clothes on the side of my room and flung it over my sticky shoulders. I pounded down the stairs, ran into the bathroom, and squirted a gob of gel into my hair. Blond spikes poked up in all directions. Perfect. I grabbed my wallet off of the television in the living room and sauntered into the kitchen while tucking it slyly into my back pocket. ?Dad He was sitting at the kitchen table, going over some papers from work. ?What He reacted sharply, as always. ?Can I borrow, like, twenty bucks ?Twenty dollars He questioned me as though I had asked for a thousand. ?Yeah.? ?Where are you going ?Chris' house.? ?And when will you be home ?I don't know. Whenever.? ?Hmm, I see.? He paused. ?And why do you need twenty dollars to go to Chris' house ?I owe him money.? ?For what The questions were killing me. ?Dad! Can I have the money or not?!? I threw my arms out at my sides. He got me so frustrated, I couldn't help shouting. ?My wallet's on the television.? ?Alright,? I sighed, relieved that our conversation was over. I walked back into the living room and located his wallet above the stereo. Unfolding the worn leather, I counted the bills inside. Forty-six dollars. I plucked a twenty and two tens out of the creased material and tucked them into my pocket. He'd never notice. ?Goodnight, ma!? I shouted upstairs. She was probably asleep anyway. She had a lot on her mind these days. I walked outside and was greeted by the sounds of my neighborhood. Police sirens wailed nearby, I could hear the baby next door screaming, and the barking of dogs could be heard coming from every tiny, chain-linked yard on the block. I walked quickly down the street and ducked into the bodega on the corner. I picked up a 40 and walked up to

Detoxing Diets B.S. or Life Changing Professor Ramos Blog
Detoxing Diets B.S. or Life Changing My cousin Jackie was a week away from her wedding date and was starting to feel anxious. She hadnââ¬â¢t been sticking to her diet and was feeling the pressure of fitting into her beautiful blush, mermaid fitted, beaded wedding gown. She tried juicing to lose weight quickly and feel healthy enough to finishing the last-minute details of the upcoming nuptials. Only thing is she is diabetic and her sugar levels were up and down making her sick the week of her wedding. Realizing it was the liquid diet making her ill, she switched to a well-balanced diet of healthy foods and finished her weight loss goal. She looked stunning and walked happily down the aisle on her wedding day with her handsome husband. Maintaining good health and riding the body of unnecessary and harmful chemicals is a natural concern for general health. Weight loss is one of the most common concern among Americans and searching for ways to achieve this successfully. The most advertised and common remedies are detox diets, whether it is juicing or colonics. It is a way to rejuvenate, renew and recharge the body. They promise to help you feel and look better by following a regimen. Most people, majority being women, are looking for a quick fix or fast solution to improve their body image or rapid weight loss. Others may consider it to be a way to cure an illness or disease. Is there proof of this conclusion? Do we need help to detox our bodies? I believe it is another ââ¬Å"fadâ⬠for companies to sell a product or service that is unnecessary. Toxins we are exposed to daily may include pollutants in the air, ingredients in processed foods, pesticides on produce, or arsenic or mercury in the soil. For those who have an allergy to gluten that can also be harmful. Most things we consume can be harmful if we ingest a considerable amount. By cutting down on sugars, fats, and salt, with the help of our natural filtration system we can start feeling better (Cloake). Drinking only liquid can result in some weight loss but once carbohydrates and a normal diet is resumed the weight is gained back. There can be health risk when a detox diet is done improperly or for a long period of time.à Lack of protein due to insufficient amino acids for repair resulting in wasting of the muscle. Our bodies detoxify naturally every day without juicing. We have the kidneys and liver which filter and remove ingested toxins. Apovian says, ââ¬Å"If someone wishes to detox from pesticides, sugars, or any other unhealthy substance, the best thing to do is abstain from it, and let the body remove the unwanted substance.â⬠Most Americans are on the go and eat poorly due to time and money. With poor diet, necessary vitamins are lacking effecting the immune system therefore we feel tired and rundown. Eating better and exercise can help our body and organs function properly improving cellular and hormone balances. Fruits and vegetables should be a part of the daily diet so once individuals start drinking the juice they feel better attributing it to the liquid diet. ââ¬Å"The notion that you can and should flush out your arteries or your intestines may seem plausible but itââ¬â¢s not,â⬠says Edzard Ernst, M.D., Ph.D., professor of complementary medicine at Peninsula Medica l School in Exeter, England. In the article, ââ¬Å"Do You Really Need to Detoxâ⬠colon cleansing can be used to treat occasional constipation but regular colonics can cause cramping, nausea and vomiting. Dehydration can also be a risk with the persistent bowel movements and vomiting, electrolyte imbalance and infection can cause illness or death. Colonics can cause perforation and micro tears in the colon creating other health problems. People may be ignoring symptoms of a more serious condition and decide not to seek medical attention. Detox teas may decrease constipation, bloat, and flatulence by loosening bowels to clear intestines of any slow digesting material (Havala). According to Dr. B.J Hardick writes of detoxing as a necessity in the article, ââ¬Å"The history of detox and why itââ¬â¢s not a fad,â⬠stating the history and the ââ¬Å"generation of wisdom and scientific knowledgeâ⬠remains relevant and useful today. Detoxing has been used for centuries in the form of saunas or herbal baths but also in traditional Chinese medicine. They practice the ayurvedic method of detoxification after the World Trade Center tragedy and participants saw positive results in their health. We can still use ancient medicine in modern situations with a positive outcome. Metal can build up in the body through fish, environment and supplements that needs to be expelled through a detox of some form. He also states holistic medicine addresses issue with the body as a whole for treatment and not just the symptoms. The symptoms can be treated individually and caused by toxic accumulation. The body needs to be brought back to health as a whole in a purified state. Avoiding toxins or an environment can keep the body from absorbing possible harmful chemicals into the body. This science free health trend is driven by marketing, misinformation and fear.à It solely benefits the companies of these products and gives false hope to those with high expectations of life changing results. We can change our lifestyle and daily habits with the same results for long term success instead of these crash diets with short term results. Itââ¬â¢s our sedentary lives and toxic exposure to food, gadgets, workplace and homes that cause our bodies to shut down or not function how they should be to naturally expel harmful toxins. There are no studies to show that a detox diet is necessary and can lead to a longer life. The human body can defend itself against environmental insults and occasional indulgences naturally. Save the money on a ââ¬Å"fadâ⬠diet and start living a healthier lifestyle for longevity and happiness. Education is key to avoid falling prey to scams or nonsense suggestions we may run across. Bacteria Relationships - Bacteria and Humans
Bacteria Relationships - Bacteria and Humans Bacteria are all around us and most people only consider these prokaryotic organisms to be disease-causing parasites. While it is true that some bacteria are responsible for a large number of human diseases, others play a vital role in necessary human functions such as digestion. Bacteria also make it possible for certain elements such as carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen to be returned to the atmosphere. These bacteria ensure that the cycle of chemical exchange between organisms and their environment is continuous. Life as we know it would not exist without bacteria to decompose waste and dead organisms, thus playing a key role in the flow of energy in environmental food chains. Are Bacteria Friend or Foe? The decision as to whether bacteria are friend or foe becomes more difficult when both the positive and negative aspects of the relationship between humans and bacteria are considered. There are three types of symbiotic relationships in which humans and bacteria coexist. The types of symbiosis are termed commensalism, mutualism, and parasitism. Symbiotic Relationships Commensalism is a relationship that is beneficial to the bacteria but does not help or harm the host. Most commensal bacteria reside on epithelial surfaces that come in contact with the external environment. They are commonly found on the skin, as well as in the respiratory tract and the gastrointestinal tract. Commensal bacteria acquire nutrients and a place to live and grow from their host. In some instances, commensal bacteria may become pathogenic and cause disease, or they may provide a benefit for the host. In a mutualistic relationship, both the bacteria and the host benefit. For example, there are several kinds of bacteria that live on the skin and inside the mouth, nose, throat, and intestines of humans and animals. These bacteria receive a place to live and feed while keeping other harmful microbes from taking up residence. Bacteria in the digestive system assist in nutrient metabolism, vitamin production, and waste processing. They also aid in the hosts immune system response to pathogenic bacteria. Most of the bacteria that reside within humans are either mutual or commensal. A parasitic relationship is one in which the bacteria benefit while the host is harmed. Pathogenic parasites, which cause disease, do so by resisting the hosts defenses and growing at the expense of the host. These bacteria produce poisonous substances called endotoxins and exotoxins, which are responsible for the symptoms that occur with an illness. Disease-causing bacteria are responsible for a number of diseases including meningitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and several types of food-borne diseases. Bacteria: Helpful or Harmful? When all of the facts are considered, bacteria are more helpful than harmful. Humans have exploited bacteria for a wide variety of uses. Such uses include making cheese and butter, decomposing waste in sewage plants, and developing antibiotics. Scientists are even exploring ways for storing data on bacteria. Bacteria are extremely resilient and some are capable of living in the most extreme environments. Bacteria have demonstrated that they are able to survive without us, but we could not live without them.

Abortion and the Medical Profession Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Abortion and the Medical Profession - Essay Example Perhaps no other issue stirs up heated debates and fierce emotions than that of abortion. It is one of the most contentious issues in society today. Medical and health care professionals are often put into a serious quandary regarding abortion and their professional practice in regards to their personal and religious beliefs. This issue of abortion clearly has ethical implications for people who want to avail of these surgical procedures and the ones performing them. Like any divisive issue, there are no easy answers to such a sticky emotional issue. In most cases, it all boils down to oneââ¬â¢s deeply-held personal beliefs that will determine a stance the person has on a certain issue such as abortion. Before the landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court passed in the Roe vs. Wade decision, abortion was legal in a few states but illegal in most states of the country. Other countries do likewise have similar ambivalent laws regarding such a basic issue as human life and the right to life of an unborn child. The medical profession forbids the taking of life as contained in its Hippocratic Code. However, there are clearly certain instances in which abortion is justified (based on medical grounds) to be performed such as a threat to the life of the pregnant woman or the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.

Begotten :: essays research papers
Emily Heiderberg never imagined anything bad would happen to her. In the novel, Begotten by W. James Richardson, she will learn to be forgiving and she teaches the people around her the same thing. There are many stories involved and they all started with the tragic incident that happened to Emily when she was at a family outing. An unforseen incident that would change the lives of the Heiderberg family, as well as the whole town of Detroit. Certainly this book is written for adults. The authour uses profanity and racial remarks, but it is necessary to tell the story in that manner. The bad language used by the characters shows their hate and anger, but also shows that some are willing to change their ways. Richardson's method of writing is kind of hard to comprehend at first. Every chapter would start off with a new character narrarating their story. You don't know who it is until a few sentences later. The chapter starts with a character, but some chapters would have two or three nararators with a couple paragraphs each character. Sometimes it would be confusing, but once I found out who was talking, I would sometimes have to reread the paragraph from the start to understand the situatiuon. Another thing that bothered, maybe it wasn't the authour's fault, was that many quotation marks were misplaced all over the book. the first few were tolerable, but after a while it got annoying. That bothered me much and like I said, I'm not sure if it was the author or the publisher. I don't really like the style, but it's what the author used to get many stories into one. One of the many stories in the book involves Emily Heiderberg. Misbegotten means unlawfully conceived, so it wouldn't be right to say that Emily is an important character in this book. Emily is a teenage girl with a bright future, but the things that happen to her dims that future. During the book she tries to overcome her fears and to become herself again. Her rape causes all certain problems to arise. Another character that is important is Hugo Heiderberg. He grew up hating all people that weren't with the idea of whites being the supreme race. He is retired Detroit police officer and a member of the Euro-Brothers Defense Society. He was part of the "Dirty Dozen", a groups of cops that were on trial for beating a black man.

Animal Farm Lies=Failure
To have a functional society there must be a trust between the people and the government. A functional society is defined by how they treat their people, if they lie their people will not respect them. Due to the fact that the government in 1984 and Animal Farm lie to their citizens, their societies are a failure. In 1984 the government says that its citizens are free to do what they want but that is a lie. This is because the people actually live in constant fear of telling the facts due to the fatal consequences that would follow.Oââ¬â¢Brien says, ââ¬Å"Freedom is the freedom to say two plus two makes four, if that is granted all else followsâ⬠(69; Bk1, ch. 7). The citizens in 1984 are in constant fear of saying the wrong thing and getting shot which is not the definition of a free though society. A free thought is where people can think what they want without the fear of getting in trouble. As it shows in 1984 when someone has a thought they have to keep it in or they wil l be imprisoned. This is the definition of a non-successful society.If the government can lie to its people nothing will ever change and nothing will have the chance to get any better. If someone is naive of the fact that there was a better time in history before the dictatorship they see the present as better then before. Due to the falsifying of documents of history in 1984 it seems as though the party is the best to all of the people and that they are getting better, when in all actuality that is not the case. Winston says,â⬠If the party could thrust its hand into the past and say this or that event, it never happened-that, surely was more terrifying then deathâ⬠(34; Bk1, ch. 3).If the government is saying that something did or did not happen they are altering history, which is lying to its people. Winston states,â⬠Nothing exists except an endless present in which the party is always rightâ⬠(155; Bk. 2, ch. 5). Due to the lies about the past the people think that their society is good because they donââ¬â¢t know the actual situation before Big Brother. Thus creating a false reality of what happened in the past. This shows that they have lied to their citizens and thus there society was a failure. In Animal Farm it was portrayed that all animals were created equal, when is actuality that is not true.Towards the beginning of the book before the takeover all the animals were equal in theory. As soon as the takeover took place, Napoleon and the rest of the pigs established themselves as the leaders thus making them higher up in the society. Benjamin reads what was on the wall,â⬠All animals are created equal, but some animals are more equal than othersâ⬠(143; ch. 10). This is different from the original idea in that every animal was equal no matter what because of the fact that they didnââ¬â¢t like the humans and didnââ¬â¢t want to be like them.This is where they lied in regards to the changing of the slogan and gave the ir society the mark of death. Just like the other instances the lack of capability of the government not to lie to its people is very slim. This fact leads to the failure of the society as a whole. In 1984 and Animal Farm the government lied to their people which eventually led to their societies failure. If an individual does not have the ability to say something that is factual without the fear of being shot that is a functional society.It is not when the person is told what to think, how to think it, and when to think it. Also if the government lies to its people about its past then there is no way for anyone to try to make a better future. This leads to the failure of the society as a whole. Finally when the government from Animal Farm lied about the equality of its people they doomed there societies identity forever. Everyone wants to be equal and if you take that away then what are u left with. Fact is if the government lies to their people such as in Animal Farm and 1984 thei r society is doomed to failure.
